About 84% of Faichuk and 71% of Mortlocks voters reportedly backed separation from Truk District.
What happened
Faichuk leaders argued that western Chuuk Lagoon was neglected within the district. They sought a separate unit within Micronesia, not independence. In 1981 the FSM Congress voted for a separate Faichuk state, but President Nakayama vetoed it.
