Kusaie was renamed Kosrae and separated from Ponape as its own district, with James K. Pualoa as administrator.
What happened
Kosrae had been governed as part of the Ponape district through the trust period. Separation made it a district of its own; it sent its own two senators to the Congress elected in November 1976.
Why it matters
As a separate district, Kosrae became one of the four states of the FSM.
