Former president Joseph Urusemal dies in Palau, aged 73.

What happened

Urusemal, born on Woleai in 1952, was the sixth president (2003–2007) and oversaw ratification of the amended Compact. He was still Yap’s at-large senator when he died; a special election in November 2025 filled his seat.
