FSM History

Two English seamen leave the Coquille and live on a lagoon island, reaching Guam within a year.

What happened

The two English sailors, put ashore at their own request, were the first known beachcombers in the eastern Carolines, appearing in Chuuk before any lived on Pohnpei or Kosrae. They reached Guam within a year, and apart from a seaman landed on Murilo in 1827 and the Norna castaways of 1861–62, no foreigners are known to have lived in the Chuuk area until traders came in the 1870s.
