The Gypsy finds over 80 white men ashore; the Offley loses so many deserters it cannot sail.
What happened
The London whaler Gypsy found three other ships at anchor and left after two days because its captain feared his crew would desert, as so many of the Offley’s men had done. The Gypsy’s surgeon wrote of whites killing one another ashore and of the traffic in young women to visiting ships, and described the trade in tobacco, disease on the island and the ruins of Nan Madol.
