Cheyne’s Naiad spends three weeks in the Mortlocks collecting bêche-de-mer.
What happened
Andrew Cheyne, a British bêche-de-mer trader, spent three weeks in the Mortlocks and named Etal the “Naiads Group,” believing it a new discovery. He later warned ships not to trust Mortlockese, but Hezel notes there is no known case of Mortlock Islanders attacking a foreign ship.
