FSM History

After an earthquake and tsunami, Satawal and Lamotrek people sail to Guam to join relatives on Saipan.

What happened

One of the strongest earthquakes in Guam’s history sent tsunami waves through the Caroline Islands, flooding at least four atolls; Guam’s governor described islands that “disappeared for several hours” while plantings and most trees were destroyed. The first survivor canoe reached Hagåtña with Satawal people, and two more canoes arrived the next day with 41 men, women and children.
