Rev. Benjamin Snow, Lydia Snow and Hawaiians Daniel and Doreka Opunui land from the schooner Caroline, founding Kosrae’s mission.
What happened
The schooner Caroline from Honolulu carried the Snows and the Hawaiian couple Daniel and Doreka Opunui, part of the American Board (ABCFM) mission that was also starting work on Pohnpei with two other American couples. King Lepalik I (“King George”) received them in a friendly way, and Snow began formal church services by December.
Why it matters
The mission grew into Kosrae’s Congregational church, and by the 1880s Kosrae had become the center of American missionary work in Micronesia.
