The whaler Margaret Scott arrives with three smallpox cases aboard.
What happened
The New Bedford whaleship Margaret Scott arrived with three crewmen sick with smallpox, and missionary Benjamin Snow reported that the captain still let islanders come aboard. About a week earlier the whaler Delta had put smallpox victims ashore on Pohnpei, starting an epidemic that killed about 4,000 people there.
