Nine men desert the whaler Martha at Pohnpei, three of them taking a boat.
What happened
Three seamen of the Fairhaven whaler Martha took one of the ship’s boats, and a week later six more left in another. Ships offered rewards for deserters, but Hezel notes that a Martha boat sent ashore with a keg of tobacco and a barrel of beef as a bounty came back empty-handed; the captain replaced his losses with six men already living ashore.
