Godeffroy & Son opens a copra trading station on Kosrae.
What happened
The Hamburg firm Godeffroy & Son, which had opened Yap’s first permanent trade station in 1869, set up a copra station on Kosrae. As whaling faded in the 1860s, German firms buying copra (dried coconut meat) became the islands’ main commercial link with the outside world.
