American Crayton Holcomb’s Scotland makes its first visit to Yap.
What happened
Crayton Holcomb’s schooner Scotland was on a trading voyage to New Guinea. Holcomb returned in 1874 to set up his own station, and later led foreign traders in burning Yapese houses (1883) and urged Spanish officials in Manila to annex the Carolines (1884).
