FSM History

Morning Star III first enters Chuuk Lagoon and lands teacher Moses on Uman, opening the lagoon’s first mission.

What happened

A chief from Uman, visiting Nama, had heard the mission teacher there preach and invited him to Uman, promising to protect him; the MicSem list says the chief waited nine months at Nama for a teacher. As Moses and his wife were rowed ashore, Uman people waded into the water, carried the boat onto the beach and escorted them to a feast.

Why it matters

Islander teachers opened the first church in Chuuk Lagoon five years before any American missionary lived there.
