HMS Espiègle visits Kosrae, then investigates charges against O’Keefe on Yap, finding them unfounded.

What happened

HMS Espiègle was cruising Micronesia to investigate charges against traders. At Kosrae it met the missionaries and the chief, and on Yap O’Keefe was the defendant in four of the five cases heard; the British judged the charges unfounded and blamed rivals’ “jealousy at the success of his relations with the natives.” The Englishmen who had joined the March raid on a Yapese village were found guilty and fined.
