Japanese warship Ryūjō calls, the first documented Japanese ship contact with a Micronesian island.
What happened
The MicSem ship list, citing the Japanese scholar Yanaihara (1940), records that the warship Ryūjō touched at Kosrae and calls it the first documented contact of a Japanese ship with an island in Micronesia. The list gives no exact date; English Wikipedia instead says the corvette Ryūjō visited Pohnpei and Kosrae between 1882 and 1883.
