Madolenihmw fighters kill Lt. Marcelo Porras’s detachment at Ohwa: 28 dead (Moya), 33 (Habele) or 34 (Cabello).
What happened
Governor Cadarso had insisted, over the Capuchins’ doubts, on a fort and a Catholic church at Ohwa, next to the Protestant mission, as part of his road plan, and Madolenihmw’s leaders bitterly opposed a Spanish garrison there. Cabello names Krown Chapalap and Tok Herú of Madolenihmw as leaders of the attack, which struck soldiers building the fort; the Capuchins and other survivors hid in the Protestant school until they could reach a Spanish ship. The Spanish dead are counted as 28 (Moya), 33 (Habele) or 34 (Cabello).
Why it matters
It was the second of Pohnpei’s three wars against Spanish rule.
