FSM History

The German-Netherlands Telegraph Company lays a cable linking Yap with Menado, Guam and Shanghai.

What happened

The cable ran from Menado in the Dutch East Indies to Yap and on to Guam and Shanghai, linking the German colonial government to international telegraph networks. The German-Netherlands Telegraph Company built a large cable station on Yap.

Why it matters

The cable connected Yap to the outside world at a time when Pohnpei had no radio link; the Catholic mission moved its headquarters to Yap in 1907 for that reason.
