About 150 Japanese live on Pohnpei, mostly traders and officials.
What happened
Japanese traders had worked in Chuuk and Pohnpei since the 1890s. When civilian rule began, Pohnpei’s Japanese community was still small, and about 70 more Japanese arrived by 1930; most settlers before 1930 were Okinawans.
