Japanese residents come to outnumber islanders across the mandate; 6–7 in 10 migrants are Okinawan.
What happened
Japanese counts included Okinawans and Koreans as “Japanese.” By 1942 the mandate held 86,810 Japanese against 51,951 islanders, whose numbers had barely grown. Most settlers went to the Marianas and Palau; in today’s FSM they concentrated on Pohnpei and in Chuuk.
