Japanese authorities count 570 residents and one Japanese national on Woleai.
What happened
Woleai’s population had been shaken by the 1907 typhoon, after which about 300 people were taken to Saipan, returning only after 1914. In summer 1946 the US Navy counted 392 people. In between, Woleai had been garrisoned by thousands of Japanese troops and bombed for months.
