Hijikata Hisakatsu ends his seven-year stay on Satawal.
What happened
During his seven years, Hijikata worked as a copra broker for a Japanese trading company and, with carpenter Sugiura, taught Japanese at the chief’s request. Japanese restrictions on long-distance canoe travel and men’s work elsewhere reduced voyages from Satawal to Yap in these years, though travel among nearby islands continued.
