The South Seas Catholic mission counts 22,026 believers and 14 Jesuit priests.
What happened
Nearly all the mission’s clergy were foreigners: 14 Jesuit priests and 18 Jesuit brothers, plus one Japanese priest. Most of the 22,026 Catholics were islanders.
Why it matters
The South Seas diocese had more Catholics than any Japanese diocese except Nagasaki.
