Nimitz decides to bypass Truk.
What happened
After the February raid wrecked Truk’s ships and aircraft, the US chose to leave the base isolated rather than invade it. Truk, Pohnpei, Kosrae and Yap were all bypassed and bombed until the war ended.
Why it matters
Because the islands were bypassed, people there faced siege, hunger and bombing rather than ground battles.
