A Japanese kaiten human torpedo sinks the US oiler Mississinewa in Ulithi lagoon, killing 63 crew.
What happened
By late 1944 Ulithi’s lagoon was a forward anchorage for the US fleet. The Mississinewa, a fuel tanker, was the first ship hit by a kaiten, a manned torpedo; Wikipedia says that of the five kaiten sent against US ships, it was the only one to succeed.
