Truk’s commanders, including Lt. Gen. Mugikura Shunzaburō, surrender aboard USS Portland; navy units record a ceasefire.

What happened

The surrender took place on the same day as the main ceremony in Tokyo Bay. Japan’s delegation on the Portland included Vice Adm. Chūichi Hara of the 4th Fleet, Lt. Gen. Mugikura Shunzaburō of the 31st Army, and Rear Adm. Aritaka Aihara, head of the Eastern Branch of the South Seas Government.

Why it matters

It ended about three decades of Japanese rule in Chuuk.
