About 38,700 Japanese army and navy personnel (14,173 army, 24,524 navy) were repatriated from Truk to Uraga.

What happened

Truk’s commanders had surrendered aboard USS Portland on 2 September 1945, and the troops waited weeks for ships home. Earlier, Poyer counted about 38,000 Japanese civilians, laborers and troops in the lagoon alongside about 10,000 Chuukese.
