High Commissioner Elbert D. Thomas died in office, six days after protesting proposed nuclear testing at Ailinginae.
What happened
Thomas, a former US senator, had been the first civilian High Commissioner since 1951. In his letter he worried that testing at Ailinginae would destroy land and fishing grounds and leave the Rongelap people more dependent on the US government. He led the territory from Honolulu.
