Typhoon Lola flooded Mokil’s settlement, wrecked the new PICS site at Kolonia and forced food relief to Pingelap; no deaths reported.
What happened
A Trust Territory report called Lola the most damaging typhoon yet recorded in the territory, though no lives were lost. Pohnpei had not had a typhoon in about 50 years. In Kolonia some 250 people sheltered in public and church buildings, and on Mokil the sea swept over the main settlement and filled the taro patch with water.
