Typhoon Ophelia passed directly over Ulithi, killing two boys, wrecking about a quarter of houses and most canoes, and ruining taro.
What happened
Anthropologist William Lessa called Ophelia the worst storm to hit Ulithi since 1907. Its waves damaged nearly all beaches and flooded the interior of Falalop, and salt water spoiled the taro pits. Lessa notes that, apart from the two deaths, injuries were slight.
