The first Peace Corps volunteers arrived in Micronesia; 323 were in place by mid-November.
What happened
In May 1966 Micronesian leaders from all six districts asked for Peace Corps volunteers, and President Johnson called for “the greatest possible involvement” of the Peace Corps. Most volunteers taught English or worked in public health.
Why it matters
The volunteers became one of the most visible parts of the 1960s US push in Micronesia.
