FSM History

National

The Congress of Micronesia first convened, the first Micronesia-wide legislature; the date is now FSM Law Day.

What happened

The Congress met on Saipan, the Trust Territory headquarters, with members from all six districts. In 1997 Acting President Jacob Nena proclaimed 12 July Micronesian Law Day, because the date also marked the opening of the 1975 Constitutional Convention and of the FSM Supreme Court in 1981.

Why it matters

It was the first recognized Micronesia-wide legislature since the Trust Territory began.
