The Future Political Status Commission reported, and formal status negotiations with the Nixon administration began.
What happened
The commission, chaired by Lazarus Salii of Palau, surprised US negotiators with “the clarity of the Micronesia proposal.” It sought a constitution, settlement of war claims and control over Micronesian land.
Why it matters
These talks began the negotiations that ended with the Compact of Free Association in 1986.
