The Community College of Micronesia began in Ponape; one account says operations started in 1969, while the official history dates the renaming to 1970.

What happened

The college grew out of the Micronesian Teacher Education Center, which trained teachers on Pohnpei under a University of Hawaii contract from 1963. At first it offered associate degrees in elementary education. Sources differ on whether it began operating in 1969 or was renamed in 1970.
