FSM History

National

Congressional elections; Nakayama is then unanimously re-elected president and Bailey Olter defeats incumbent VP Petrus Tun.

What happened

Voters chose all 14 members of Congress, all independents, and the new Congress then unanimously re-elected Nakayama. Accounts of the vice presidency differ: Wikipedia says Bailey Olter of Pohnpei defeated Petrus Tun, while the Habele biography of Tun says he did not seek re-election.

Why it matters

Nakayama became the first president to serve two terms; Hanlon writes that his second term aimed to build the FSM’s regional and international credibility.
