Compact enters into force and US administration ends; FSM–US diplomatic relations date from this day.

What happened

With the Compact in force, the FSM governed itself and ran its own foreign relations, while the US kept authority over defense and security. The US also began 15 years of grant funding. The UN Security Council formally ended the trusteeship in December 1990.

Why it matters

This date begins the era of free association, which has continued through three Compact funding periods.
