National

All 14 Congress seats elected; a referendum on four-year terms for all members fails, 62.63% against.

What happened

The proposal would have given every member of Congress a four-year term instead of two. It lost in all four states, 20,079 votes to 11,984.

Why it matters

Four-year terms for all members failed again in later referendums, including 1991, 1995 and 2011.
