FSM admitted to the United Nations (General Assembly resolution 46/2).
What happened
The UN admitted the FSM five years after the Compact took effect, a step President Haglelgam had said the end of the trusteeship in 1990 would allow. Its main priority at the UN has been raising climate change and its effects on small island states.
Why it matters
The government still marks its UN membership “since 1991” in official statements.
