FSM History

Measles outbreak: 393 cases and one child death, mostly among adults; mass vaccination follows.

What happened

It was the FSM’s first measles in 20 years. Cases began in Kosrae and spread to Pohnpei and Chuuk, and about two-thirds were adults, most of those with records had been vaccinated; the CDC report pointed to vaccine failure, probably from past problems keeping vaccines cold. Mass vaccination reached about 87% of the target population, and no cases were reported after August.
