FSM History

Congress elects Wesley Simina of Chuuk as 10th president and re-elects Aren Palik as VP.

What happened

Simina, born in 1961, had been Chuuk’s governor from 2005 to 2011 and Speaker since 2015. One analyst notes an informal custom of rotating the presidency among the states, under which Kosrae had seemed due, and argues Simina’s selection reflected Chuuk’s size and his seniority. Palik’s re-election kept the vice presidency with Kosrae.
