Outgoing President Panuelo’s 13-page letter accuses China of “political warfare” and floats recognizing Taiwan; Beijing calls it “smears”.
What happened
In the leaked letter to Congress and the state governors, Panuelo alleged bribery, surveillance and threats to his safety by Chinese officials, and said Taiwan had offered help if the FSM switched recognition. China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning called the claims “smears and accusations” that “do not accord with the facts.” Panuelo was due to leave office in May, and his successor kept recognition of Beijing.
