Capt. Knight’s Spy trades at Pohnpei, finds a small colony of ex-convicts, and fights islanders over iron.
What happened
The Salem brig Spy, under John B. Knight, was piloted into harbor by an Irishman, O’Connell. Ex-convicts living ashore, some of whom had arrived as stowaways from Botany Bay, helped the crew obtain turtle shell; on the third day a fight broke out when islanders tried to take iron from the ship.
