Jules Dudoit’s bark Clementine visits Kosrae for tortoise shell and finds islanders friendly.
What happened
The Hawaiian bark Clementine came to collect tortoise shell, and its visitors wrote that “the people appeared amicable and well disposed to communicate with strangers.” The bark may have returned the next year. This friendly report came shortly before Kosraeans attacked two ships in 1835.
