The brig Waverly is captured and its crew killed after its captain allegedly abducted a chief’s daughter, who drowned.
What happened
The Hawaiian brig Waverly, under Captain Cathcart, had stopped at Kosrae while searching for a captain held captive on Bikini. Kosraeans captured the ship and killed its crew, reportedly because Cathcart had abducted a chief’s daughter, who drowned; the COM-FSM outline says the ship was burned at Lelu. Hezel suggests the island’s white beachcombers may have had a hand in the attacks of 1835.
