The cutter Lambton (C. H. Hart) leads a counterattack; the responsible chief is later hanged.

What happened

Captain C. H. Hart of the Sydney cutter Lambton and two other ship captains led about 40 sailors and resident whites, with some 400 Pohnpeian warriors, against the attackers. Those blamed were caught and killed, and their leader, named Nanawah in the MicSem list, was hanged from the Lambton’s yardarm; some of his followers went into exile on a small island off the northeast coast.

Why it matters

The next year Hart and the Lambton led the massacre on Ngatik, and HMS Larne investigated both affairs in 1839.
