Salik and six sons depose Sru II; Awane Lepalik I (“King George”), friendly to whalers, begins his reign.
What happened
According to the COM-FSM outline, Awane Sru II tried to take the land division of Tofol from his nephew Salik, and Salik and his six sons revolted and deposed him. The new king, Awane Lepalik I, known to sailors as “King George,” was friendly to the whalers, and Kosrae then had 18 chiefly titles.
Why it matters
Lepalik I later welcomed and protected the first Protestant missionaries, who arrived in 1852.
