D’Urville’s ships pass Yap; canoes stand off and one islander shouts the island’s name.
What happened
On his second expedition, Dumont d’Urville coasted Yap for a day; canoes kept their distance, and one man shouted the island’s name, “Guap.” Hezel writes that Yapese discouraged visitors, and traders did not think it safe to leave a party ashore until 1866.
