Kosraeans take the British whaler Harriet, kill all crew and burn it at Okat.
What happened
The London whaler Harriet put in at Kosrae; four days later, while many of the crew were ashore, Kosraeans took the ship, killed the whole crew and burned it. The attack was allegedly a reprisal for the seizure and rape of Kosraean women or girls. The COM-FSM outline names the ship the Henrietta and dates the attack to 1843, while the MicSem list and Hezel give the Harriet in 1842.
Why it matters
A ship that stayed at Kosrae in early 1843 found no whites ashore, and new beachcombers who came later asked to leave for Pohnpei for fear of being known as witnesses.
