Andrew Cheyne’s Naiad anchors at Yap for a well-documented two-month stay.

What happened

Andrew Cheyne, a British bêche-de-mer trader, brought Palauans to work his curing station, showed the Yapese how firearms worked and met a survivor of the Spanish ships attacked in 1836. When an epidemic broke out, Yapese planned to seize his ship, and the Naiad left on 15 October under threat, leaving behind some lascar crewmen held by the people of Tomil.
