The Potomac finds seven ships in port at Pohnpei.
What happened
The Nantucket whaler Potomac, under Isaac B. Hussey, found seven ships in port, and more arrived in the following weeks. Many of its hands deserted, and the captain put in irons a beachcomber “suspected of enticing our men to run away.” Between 1840 and 1860 up to 40 whaleships a year called at Pohnpei.
