Swedish frigate Eugenie trades at Pohnpei and reports two Americans trading profitably on Mokil.
What happened
The Swedish navy frigate Eugenie, on a scientific voyage, found two Americans on Mokil selling provisions to passing ships; Hezel says they earned up to forty dollars a month, and their wives wore cotton blouses. Past warfare had reduced Mokil’s population to 87, and at Pohnpei islanders preferred copper coins to silver.
